Introduction

Dave Brubeck is a world-renowned pianist and composer of jazz and classical music. He has been performing professionally since the 1940s and continues to tour the world. The Brubeck Quartet embodied “West Coast jazz” and released the groundbreaking album Time Out, which featured “Take Five,” the best selling jazz single in history.

Although best known as a jazz musician, Brubeck's compositions include large-scale choral and orchestral works in a classical tradition. In addition to his musical achievements, Brubeck is also known for his unbending support of human rights and cultural exchange.

The Times of Dave Brubeck traveling exhibit focuses on Brubeck's contributions to jazz and classical music, his involvement in civil rights issues, and his role in cultural ambassadorship programs that used jazz to improve relations between the United States and other countries.

We welcome inquiries from any institution interested in hosting the exhibit.

For more information please contact Trish Richards.

The exhibit features five large exhibits panels that tell his story through text and images of photographs and documents from throughout his career. The introductory panel has a continuous loop of Brubeck's tunes as background music for visitors. The jazz panel has an on-demand audio system that plays short clips of Brubeck explaining polytonality and polyrhythms followed by musical examples of each concept. Audio panels require AC power and have built-in speakers (no headphones or wands) and adjustable volume.

In engaging the visual and audio elements of the exhibit, visitors will gain an appreciation for the musical and cultural accomplishments of Brubeck as well as the impact of jazz on the civil rights movement and US foreign policy.

The University of the Pacific Library's Holt-Atherton Special Collections is the home of the Brubeck Collection. It includes thousands of letters, photographs, concert programs, musical scores, and recordings that document Dave and Iola Brubeck's lives from his birth in 1920 to the present. The traveling exhibit was created by the Special Collections staff and employs extensive images of materials from the Brubeck collection.
