Paul Desmond Papers

Alto Saxophonist Paul Desmond (1924-1977) was an essential member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet in the 1950s and 1960s. As a member of the Quartet, Desmond wrote “Take Five,” the best selling jazz single in history. The Desmond Papers contain a variety of materials such as letters, photographs, and clippings. The heart of the collection is formed by the correspondence and “memos to myself” (diary-like entries by Desmond). The letters and memos offer vivid insights into Desmond's psyche and outlook on life, as well as his musical career. The correspondence consists of over 300 letters to and from Desmond throughout his childhood and adult life. They include letters from Dave and Iola Brubeck in 1951 that signify the beginning of the Brubeck Quartet, as well as extensive exchanges between Desmond and his father. Online finding aid
