John Muir’s Personal Library

Housed in Muir’s own ornate Victorian bookcases, this collection of 700 books represents about half the books that were known to exist in Muir’s working library at his home in Martinez, California.

Western Americana Book Collection

To support the Muir Collection the University of the Pacific Library acquires works about Muir, his associates and contemporaries, conservation, natural and environmental history, and the national parks. Sylvester F. Adrian Papers on the John Muir Memorial Park, Wisconsin

Sylvester "Syl" Adrian of Montello, Wisconsin was an inventor, resort and tavern owner, museum owner, conservationist and local historian. He was instrumental in the creation of the John Muir Memorial County Park on the first Wisconsin homesite of John Muir. Online finding aid.

William Frederic Badè Papers

William Frederic Badè was a friend during Muir's later years, and Muir's literary executor. Badè edited and published Muir's posthumous works and wrote The Life and Letters of John Muir, 1924. His papers include book reviews of Muir's works, newspaper clippings about Muir, transcriptions of journal sections, manuscripts, letters, and reminiscences. His papers are part of the John Muir Papers.

Mary Louise Brown Collection of Muiriana

Mary Louise Brown studied the life, works, and bibliography of John Muir for many years. She intended to create a film about the great naturalist. Her papers consist of many notes, annotations of published texts by and about Muir, illustrations, and notes for original scenarios based on various periods of Muir's life. Online finding aid.

James Eastman Shone Collection

James Eastman Shone was a descendant of John Muir's sister Sarah Muir Galloway. The collection includes 36 letters to and from John Muir, over 100 Muir sketches and drawings, over 40 photographs, and personal papers, genealogy notes and items that had belonged to various family members, including Ann Gilrye (John Muir's mother), Sarah Muir Galloway, and Anna Galloway Eastman. Madie Brown Emaran Papers

Madie Brown Emparan was a conservationist and historian. Her papers mostly of notes and letters about Muir and the John Muir Association. Her papers are part of the Small California Collections.

Holway R. Jones Sierra Club Papers

The Holway Jones Papers consist largely of Sierra Club Board of Directors' Minutes (1907-1982) and related materials. Online finding aid.

William F. & Maymie B. Kimes Bibliography

Nearly 300 published pamphlets, journal articles, speeches, and other writings by John Muir are arranged chronologically and numbered following sequence created by William F. & Maymie B. Kimes in "John Muir; A Reading Bibliography" (1986); most, but not all, of the items listed in Kimes' work are represented in the John Muir Papers.

John Muir and Ina Coolbrith Correspondence 1906-1911

This small collection includes four letters from John Muir to Ina Coolbrith. Coolbrith was a poet and writer, and a prominent figure in the San Francisco literary community. These papers are part of the Small California Collections.

John Muir and William Trout Correspondence

This collection consists of letters between Muir and William Trout, factory owner, Petersboro and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Muir had worked for Trout between 1864 and 1866. Online finding aid.

Muir/Strentzel Family and Legal Papers

These papers include correspondence of the Strentzel family from 1850 to 1890, and a collection of legal documents dating from 1853 to 1916 concerning the management and real estate transactions of the Strentzel/Muir ranch at Martinez. This collection also includes some of the John Strentzel and John Muir estate documents and the Decree of Naturalization giving Muir, a native Scot, naturalization status. These papers are included in the John Muir Papers.

Muiriana Collection

This collection contains a variety of materials, including original personal correspondence of John Muir and materials related to Muir family genealogy. The genealogy materials include information on the burial place of John Muir’s father, Daniel Muir, as well as a family history on Daniel’s sister, Mary (Muir) Blackley. Harriet Nicewonger Papers, 1956-1982

Mr. And Mrs. Charles R. Nicewonger were John Muir enthusiasts and members of the John Muir Memorial Association. The papers are part of the Small California Collections.

Shirley Sargent Papers

Shirley Sargent was a publisher and author who wrote both fiction and non-fiction for adults and children. Many of her works focus on the history of Yosemite National Park. Online finding aid.

Sierra Club

The 20 items in this collection date from 1896 to 1913, and include a resolution by John Muir regarding the Cascade Forest Reservation, a Sierra Club manuscript on toll roads in Yosemite, a Sierra Club outing list (1908), and transcripts of correspondence regarding Hetch Hetchy. The items are part of the John Muir Papers.

Linnie Marsh Wolfe Papers

Linnie Marsh Wolfe's papers include correspondence from 1918 to 1945. Research materials for her two books are in the collection, including her notes and transcriptions of some of Muir's journal entries, manuscripts, and letters. The typed manuscripts of her books, business papers relating to them, promotional materials, photographs on Yosemite and Muir's family and associates, and other miscellaneous materials about Muir and his work are also in the collection.
