ERIC - some helpful hints

ED stands for an ERIC document.  Most lesson plans and curriculum material are designated this way.  A six digit number follows the ED.

EJ stands for a journal article.  This also has a six digit number.  The full-text of some articles is available by clicking on the SFX logo.

Results can be obtained with this search structure:

  • In the first box, use the default keyword search setting.  Type the words for your topic, such as language arts, mathematics, etc.
  • In the second box, change the setting to Descriptor, DE.  Type the words “lesson plans” in this box.
  • Change your date setting for more recent items.

Education Full - text-some helpful hints

This consists of journal articles only, some full-text, others not.  The same logo appears so you can find out if it is available in print or online.  When searching this database, the best results are found when using the All-Smart Search setting.

Construct your search this way:

  • In the first box, put your topic, such as reading, language arts, etc.
  • In the second box, use any of the following terms:
    • Activities, teaching, or teaching methods
  • As in most databases, combining terms for a larger number of items is accomplished by using the word “or” with like topics.  Example:  activities or teaching or teaching methods.  Remember to type this in the same box.
  • However, in the beginning, just use one to see how many items are available

Children's Literature

Despite the number of web sites available, such as Carol Hurst’s at http://www.carolhurst.com, the library has a children’s literature section located on the third floor and marked with a blue sign with call numbers beginning with PZ 7, 8, etc.  These books can also be found by searching the PacifiCat catalog.

Some valuable reference books are:
A to Zoo:  Subject Access to Children’s Picture Books  PZ5 L715 1998
100 Most Popular Picture Book Authors and Illustrators PS490 M395 2000

Others can be located by using the advanced search in PacifiCat and limiting to reference in the Collection box.  Just type “children’s literature” in the first box after setting the Collection limit and then click on go.
