Databases

In addition to the databases listed in the general Music Subject Guide, students doing research in music management should also search in one or more of these databases:

  • Business Source Premier (EBSCO) – Search for journal, trade, and magazine articles in business disciplines; many full-text.
  • Mint Global – A subscription database that includes four different sections covering business and industry news, detailed company information, industry profiles and market research, as well as company reports.  Includes information on public and private companies.  Pacific users only.
  • Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe – Find state and federal laws.  Database also contains “News” and “Business” sections containing thousands of full text publications from both domestic and foreign countries and markets. The “Business” section includes the popular Hoover’s company profiles and the ability to compare one company against another. Includes public SEC company filings.

Web Sites

  • ArtsNet - A community service supported by Carnegie Mellon University, this site "has evolved into a central linking point for a group of organizations and agencies working on computer and information technology issues that impact the arts management process. It presents useful interdisciplinary resources, such as the National Association of State Arts Agencies, and continues to expand.
  • ASCAP - The homepage for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
  • BMI - The hompage for Broadcast Music, Inc.
  • Columbia Law School Music Plagarism Project - Collects, organizes and distributes graphic and audio materials associated with music copyright infringement cases in the United States from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present.
  • Future of Music Coalition - A not-for-profit collaboration between members of the music, technology, public policy and intellectual property law communities. The FMC seeks to educate the media, policymakers, and the public about music / technology issues.
  • Kohn on Music Licensing - Provides information on current litigation, an online supplement to Kohn on Licensing, and links to music rights clearance organizations, music performing rights organizations, music mechanical rights societies, music industry associations, and broadcast associations.

Searching by Subject

Search by subject to find items about a specific topic when you don't have a specific author or title.  Subject searching is also useful when browsing for music for specific instruments, ensembles, or genres (e.g. sonatas, symphonies, operas, etc.) when the composer or title is not known.

1. To find items in the library, go to PacifiCat , and select Advanced Searches .
2. Select the Format and/or Material Type you are looking for.
3. Under Field to Search: choose Subject .
4. Under Words adjacent? click Yes: .
5. Enter search term(s) from the following list in the first blank box:
