Reference Books

The library has a number of reference books of potential use for research in this area. For example:

Electronic Resources/Databases

The library’s databases are arranged by disciplines (categories), for example, Engineering, Political Science, Sociology, etc. First look for the categories that best match your research topic, then look for specific resources (databases) that may contain information you need. The following are a few suggestions:

  • Category: Interdisciplinary
    • Academic Search Complete: a comprehensive collection of journals (scholarly and non-scholarly) including many sociological and political titles.
    • JSTOR: contains backfiles of more than 40 legal journals in full-text
  • Category: Political Science
    • CQ Electronic Library: a reference resource for research in American government, politics, history, public policy, and current affairs.
  • Category: Sociology
    • SocINDEX with Full Text: A sociology research database that offers all sub-disciplines of sociology, including abortion, anthropology, criminology, criminal justice, cultural sociology, economic development, ethnic & racial studies, welfare, and many others.
  • Category: Newspapers
    • Newspaper Source: This database provides selected full text coverage for 245 newspapers, newswires and other sources
    • Newsstand: Another major database for newspaper articles. Full text of 300+ U.S. and international news sources. Includes coverage of 150+ major U.S. and international newspapers such as The New York Times and the Times of London.
  • Category: References and Statistics
    • Counting California: a collection of statistics about California
    • Education Statistics at a Glance (NCES): Education Statistics at a Glance brings together data from several NCES sources including: The Condition of Education, The Digest of Education Statistics, Indicators of School Crime and Safety, Projections of Education Statistics, and Youth Indicators.
    • FedStats: A website provides access to the full range of official statistical information produced by the Federal Government.
    • STAT-USA (U.S. Dept. of Commerce): a service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a single point of access to authoritative business, trade, and economic information from across the Federal Government.

Web sources you can trust!

  • Pew Research Center
    The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan organization that provides information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world by conducting public opinion polling and social science research. It does not take positions on policy issues.
  • United Nations Statistics Division
    The goal of this division is to collect, analyze and disseminate a wide range of statistical
    information to the general public. The site includes links to information on statistical
    methods, links to data and reports, and other sources.
  • Domestic and International Statistics Resources
    The Bureau of Labor Statistics has compiled a list of statistical agencies or bureaus of many other countries, from Algeria to Yugoslavia. Links to international organizations
    are also provided.
  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:
    Full-text of reports and statistical data on topics such as poverty, social services, welfare and work
  • Russell Sage Foundation Social Inequality Working Papers:
    Scholarly papers that address a variety of topics within the broader topic of inequality
