Resources for Pacific Seminar II

Prepared by Lorrie Knight

What If There Were No Countries?

Books

Use PacifiCat, our online catalog to search for books. World citizenship is one heading that works! E-books are those that can be read online. If working outside of the library, you may be prompted to install a small bit of software.

Periodical Articles

The library has periodical articles in print and online. Others you can request through InterLibrary Loan. We have both popular and scholarly periodicals. Here are some ways to tell the difference:

Popular Scholarly
Contemporary, popular topics Literature reviews, original research
Written by staff writers Written by scholars and experts
Selected by the editor Accepted by a panel of experts
Few or no footnotes, bibliographies Footnotes, bibliographies

Databases

The following databases should be useful for this course:

  • Academic Search Complete: abstracts and full-text of popular and scholarly articles
  • JSTOR: backfiles of the full-text of important scholarly journals
  • Scopus: index and links to a wide array of journals. Can also function as a citation tracker.
  • SpringerLinkindex and full content to social science and science journals.
  • WorldCat: freely available catalog of books from libraries around the world. If not held at Pacific, you can request through ILL.

E-Journals

The ejournal list is just that—a directory of journals available in electronic format. Use this if you want to see if the library has a particular journal in this format. If you want to search by subject, use a database, such as one of those listed above.

InterLibrary Loan

Use Interlibrary Loan to request books and articles. Allow two weeks for delivery. Books are free; articles are $1.00 regular or $3.00 fax.
